KIRKUS REVIEW

This Jataka tale from India tells of three princes who are taken separately, at different seasons, to see a plum tree. One sees beautiful leaves in fall, one sees ugly bare branches in winter, and one sees lovely blossoms in spring. Thus they can't agree about the plum tree, until they are taken together in summer to see and taste the ripe fruit. Reflective children may find food for thought in the story, but both the princes' pastimes between visits and Arno's violet- and turquoise-colored drawings are so sedate that only the most docile beginning readers will bite.
