IGLOOS, YURTS AND TOTEM POLES

Life in thirteen primitive, aboriginal and nomadic cultures around the globe is described in the first person by imaginary boys and girls growing up as tribal members. A South American boy tells of hunting monkeys with a blow pipe; a Samoan girl describes her reaction to being tattooed and a Siberian child explains that her tribe follows the migration of the reindeer. The text is written in clear suitable language, easily within the grasp of nine to twelve year olds. The book was published originally in German; four members of the Hamburg Museum of Ethnology and Prehistory wrote the text. The illustrations, by a group of muscum experts, are explicit and informative, but only occasionally decorative. 72 of them reproduced in line, add to the content material value, however. The inclusion of head hunting and head-shrinking will be appreciated by those strange young moderns who go in for weird collecting hobbies.
