KIRKUS REVIEW

The Grand Hotel pattern to portray the life of those in a typical Italian pension, in Milan a home of all and yet none, where the boarders remain solitary because of their inherent self-absorption, incomprehension, or fundamental indifference to all but themselves. This picture of a home of passage is limited to the scholastic year of a nine year old child, Emma, the central figure through whose eyes boarders, landlady, and servants are pictured. Simply done -- with a certain amount of feeling and insight.
