ON THIS ROCK: An Appeal for Christian Unity

This book is based upon the Hoover lectures on Christian Unity delivered by the Methodist Bishop of New York at the University of Chicago. This is a vigorous, forthright plea for the organic unity of Protestant denominations. Bishop Oxman thinks that Protesests exaggerates the difficulties in the way of reunion. ""Frankly, I am impatient"", he writes. ""It is time for Christians who want union to turn from talk to action."" But Bishop Oxman is fully aware of the difficulties and deals with them frankly in a lecture on ""the values that lie in diversity"". Furthermore, he sees the difficulty of the Churches drawing together in a world which is pulling apart. So he deals with Communism in a chapter as differences in economic thought and practice, and with the growing tensions between Catholics and non-Catholics in a chapter entitled, ""The Free Mind and the Authoritarian Church"". But all of the difficulties and obstacles can be overcome if vs but will, the author contends, and is a final chapter he underlines the advantages which would accrue if unity could be attained. A book for Protestants, particularly the clergy.
