A survey vessel of the Royal Navy, active in all the waters of the world from the '30's to the '50's, Challenger provides the saga of an amphibious and often ludicrous science. For if hurricane, iceberg, and U-boat comprise some dangers, there are crocodiles, sandflies, bees, hostile Eskimos and Jap snipers as well. The surveyors must constantly stretch their steel tape and fix positions ashore- in Labrador, among the isles of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, in the Caribbean, and along the coast of Africa. The soundings at sea- and the samples obtained from the seafloor- are in their own way intriguing, but it is on solid land that the best anecdotes and contretemps occur..... Not too substantial and something of a specialty item.
