HOW TEVYE BECAME A MILKMAN by Gabriel--Adapt. & Illus. Lisowski

HOW TEVYE BECAME A MILKMAN

By

Publisher: Holt, Rinehart & Winston

It seems that Tevye was once a hauler of timber, whose wife and seven daughters frequently starved three times a day: ""at breakfast, lunch, and again at suppertime."" But riding home one night in his horse-drawn cart, through the scary Ukrainian woods, Tevye becomes a reluctant samaritan; and as a reward for giving a ride to the wife and mother of the richest man in the village, Tevye gets a cow. As pictured in scratchy black line it's pleasantly rustic, but far from arresting, and as told here--with a frightened Tevye at first pretending not to hear the lost women's calls--sufficiently human, but weaker than the hero's nerve in the forest.
