An extremely Gallic account of the events precipitated by Flavie Lacail when she could not prevent a vase from falling out of her window. For it killed M. Euffe, kingpin of his business, the Silken Net, on his way to visit his mistress, and his death created not only business problems, but marital and emotional ones, that found their answers in the actions of his wife and children. Alberte's happy marriage which made her the widow of a hero, Lucette whose elopement with the family chauffeur turned out amazingly well, Germain and Edmond who found, in and out of marriage, lessons worth learning -- and Flavie herself whose ordinary conduct was unchanged in spite of the coincidence of her contacts with the Euffes -- these are the central figures for a sometimes amusing, always detailed, picture of the bourgeois life in Grenoble.
