KIRKUS REVIEW

This very slight volume restores to print a work first published anonymously in 1669 (as Les Lettres Portuguaises), comprising five emotional letters sent to a ""gentleman of breeding"" by a cloistered nun, herself a ""highborn woman"" enmeshed ""in a state of unreserved idolisation"" for the lover from whom she painfully (if rather rapidly) frees herself. Highly influential in its day, and much imitated, this arch conte comes across as both florid and formal to a degree that will likely make it little more than a curiosity to contemporary readers.
