..... mark the confirmation of Dr. William Chance's conversion to Catholicism when his holiday in a North African international zone confronts him with spiritual conflicts to challenge his new faith and physical adventures to test his ingenuity. A meeting with an old patient known in prison, with Columb Macgrady, a cradle Catholic convinced he is dying of cancer, his wife and their eccentric group of ex-patriate friends, and the girl Magda, leads Chance into a plot to help Macgrady escape his blackmailers and learn the truth of his illness. Deprived of his passport, hiding with Mrs. Macgrady, and facing the dangers of an uprising, Chance is able to prove the arguments for his faith and that the heart, rather than the mind, is the true believer. Immediately reminiscent of the Graham Greene type of mystical-physical adventuring, this is a knowing, colorful and intellectual exercise whose subtle points are in contrast to its outward violence.
