Longing for a dog like best friend Charlotte's golden retriever, Annabel finally comes up with a creative solution to the problem of finding a pet that won't cause problems for her allergic dad--she adopts a grass snake that turns out to be interesting to observe as well as affectionate. ""Wildred"" takes some getting used to--Charlotte, especially, is a late convert to his charms--but he makes a highly satisfactory, not too troublesome addition to the household. The author's first book for children is a smoothly narrated, sensible, realistic account of taking on an unusual pet, given added interest by the girls' nicely resolved minor misunderstandings. Perky b&w illustrations contribute to the approachable format.
