Not only a solid but a stimulating contribution to the mass of literature on education ""this is a record of a successful attempt to change radically the pattern of education in one college. It has...the value of a case history, an example of how... something important was done"". Back in 1944 a committee was formed to study the drastic revision of the Amheral curriculum. The recommendations were put into effect in 1947, a propitious time when routine was already disrupted by war. And the program worked. Two basic recommendations for change were:- the substitution of a four-course program for the then current five-course Freshman and Sophomore program, incorporating more intensified work and seminar type periods with each course; and the integration of previously separate subjects in one course. Parts I and II give the published report of the committee, a deeply sincere and invigorating document. Part III is a review of the new program,- what happened in the seven years. To any educator, to parents, to prospective Amherst students, this is significant.
