THE MAN WITH THE MONOCLE

Publisher: Doubleday, Doran

Good thriller, which registers under the spy category as well. A correspondent in Germany, before Pearl Harbor, has died because he discovered a secret clause in the tripartite pact; his associate decodes the secret manuscript he had prepared before his violent exit and gets on the job. He is sidetracked by suspicions of a woman, posing as a German, who turns out to be a British secret service agent. The scene shifts rapidly, from continent to continent; a large cast is finally brought together, and the long trail from Germany to sabotage in America is unwound. Streamline. Oppenheim type of tale; long, meaty, entertaining reading, of its kind.
