KIRKUS REVIEW

What makes a great TEAM?"" Movie-star ""TEAM,"" that is, and despite all those capital letters (even as a verb, Kanin spells it ""TEAM""), there are no real answers in these 20 little catch-all chapters, each one a mÉlange of some Hollywood history, some Kanin-style appreciation (""A TEAM!""), some gossipy biography, and some quotes from the stars. The actors in question: Garbo & John Gilbert, Jeanette MacDonald & NeLson Eddy, Laurel & Hardy (""I cannot like anyone who does not like Laurel and Hardy""), William Powell & Myrna Loy, Mickey Rooney & Judy Garland (""Did they, or didn't they? Judy says no. Mickey says yes""), Tracy & Hepburn, Wallace Beery & Marie Dressier, The Marx Brothers, Janet Gaynor & Charles Farrell, Bogart & Bacall, Hope & Crosby, Irene Dunne & Cary Grant, Astaire & Rogers, Fairbanks & Pickford, Laurence Olivier & Vivien Leigh, Rock Hudson & Doris Day, Loren & Mastroianni, Dick & Liz, Newman & Redford, Woody Allen & Diane. If we tell you that Kanin describes Paul Newman as ""this handsome, magnetic, blue-eyed, beautiful hunk of man,"" you'll get some idea of the slapdash approach. For genuine insights into film-team chemistry, read Arlene Croce on Astaire & Rogers or Pauline Kael on Newman & Redford. Kanin's pap, with 750 photos promised, is for fans who'll cherish the pictures and skip most of the words.
