The professional rise- and fall- of Clinton Ball, division superintendent of the Chesapeake & Ohio at Bandrake Depot, as marriage to Cleone advances his career, and his affair with Beverly Eddington, wife of Luke, an engineer on the line, completely ruins it. But Clint, with his love of railroading, his belief in his ideas for progress, accepts the disgrace, becomes a telegrapher, so that when an accident occurs, he is first to save Luke, to prove that his ideas of protective measures should have been adopted, and that morals have nothing to do with a man's value to an organization. A maximum of drama worked into an authentic-feeling railroading tale- possible for women, but a novel especially for masculine tastes.
