Devon brings the feverish pace of Bad Desire (1990) to Mary Higgins Clark land in this tale of star-crossed newlyweds. Callie McKenna is an actress who's been swept off her feet in a whirlwind courtship by Malcolm Rhodes, a law student who wouldn't even invite his own parents to the weddingfor the excellent reason that they know he did time as a minor for a particularly sordid murder. Now Preston Harwood, Malcolm's father, is hot on the happy couple's heels as Malcolm, steering his starry-eyed bride away from the scene of another brutal killing, takes her on a fairy-tale wedding trip that crisscrosses Californiaand includes detailed descriptions of nuptial celebrations like you'd never find in Clark. The two stay one step ahead of the father, who's desperate to end the honeymoon with a vengeance. The result is a short-story plot skillfully drawn out to novel length with factitious interludes of sex and violence—all as thin and effective as a horror film soundtrack, with a typically nasty, gratuitous surprise kept for last. The fastest read of the seasonprobably even faster than the TV movie it seems destined for.
