PARADES by Gary Jennings

PARADES

By

Pub Date: Oct. 10th, 1966
Publisher: Lippincott

Not how-to, but a mixed bag of odd facts about the history of parading and some of the customs that have grown up in and around the urge to parade. Mr. Jennings marches young readers from antiquity to the present for such as the triumphal pageant or hero welcome, the carnival/saturnalia, the religious festival, the memorial parade. There is a particularly interesting section on the music of parades and a chapter devoted to the circus/promotional types which are fast disappearing. According to the publisher's catalogue, there will be ""many photographs."" Like pictures, the reader audience is always willing to look but not necessarily in a book for this sort of thing. Its historical approach may prove useful to school libraries.
