Mr. Jennings marches young readers from antiquity to the present for such as the triumphal pageant or hero welcome, the carnival/saturnalia, the religious festival, the memorial parade. There is a particularly interesting section on the music of parades and a chapter devoted to the circus/promotional types which are fast disappearing. According to the publisher's catalogue, there will be ""many photographs."" Like pictures, the reader audience is always willing to look but not necessarily in a book for this sort of thing. Its historical approach may prove useful to school libraries.
