BENEFITS FORGOT

Another miscellany which grooves into deepening knowledge of G.B.Stern as a person, an in-knowing achieved through everything she writes, and specifically these most endearing, unconventional scraps of autobiography,- Monogram, Another Part of the Forest and now Benefits Forgot. Nobody will come to this unprejudiced- for she is so definitely a real person if you've read the others, a person you like- or not- depending on what sort of person you are. I happen to delight in every facet of her personality. A new book, be it fiction, autobiography, or one of these difficult to define books she does now and again, I hail with glee. This volume has much of post-war England, a new- and yet an old- England. It has re-discoveries of ways of life, new approaches to remembered things. It has much of her enjoyment of the writing and playing of others. It gives one a heady sense of shared experience, understanding, faith. Read as random essays- or scraps of autobiography- it has its own special savor.
