KIRKUS REVIEW

A reconnaissance mission involving a smelly neo-Tatar civilization and a dauntless six-foot-five soldier of fortune sent to find out what sort of threat they pose to the ""Empire of Alithar."" Seems the rancid Kalinthians, in cahoots with the Empire's chief local rival, are hiring a mercenary inventor to teach them the dark, ancient secrets of ballista and battering ram. It takes many a knee in the groin and javelin in the rib cage to head off the slant-eyed curs. Much blood and a fair modicum of guts, and a great deal of verbal sawdust into the bargain.
