Young Clancy Hawkins ""hits the road"" from Hornitos, California, to San Francisco in the spirit of the independent roaming Westerner of 1855. The trail he takes is filled with adventure. He comes face to face with the hatred of white men for the Chinese of California, the greed of outlaws as well as the devotion of one Chinese boy. Though they communicate in broken English, Clancy and Chin Chu make their way together, separated once by a accident and in their most dramatic adventure. Having escaped from a band of desperadoes, Clancy finds his way to the Captain of a Wells Fargo ship transporting one million dollars in gold, and warns him of the impending robbery. The criminals prove too clever and the robbery cannot be averted. And yet Clancy is instrumental in helping the authorities capture the pirates and their loot. This is a hard hitting Western, studied with typical and relentless action. It is also a fine depiction of mutual understanding between a tough ""hombre"" and a gentle Chinese boy.
