Here is another book which should be widely used in schools, as supplementary material for history, literature, science. I learned a lot myself -- as I studied the double spreads which preceed each section, showing, pictorially, the leading figures in world history, with captions telling what they were doing, at successive periods of George Washington's life. Young people, to whom parallel events are seldom made clear, will realize more fully what was going on in Europe, in the Far East, in other parts of America, in the world of science and literature. The text is succinct, almost too much so at times, so that the effect is choppy, broken. But the pace is good, the interest shifts readily from point to point. And the cross indexing makes it possible to follow one character through consecutively, if such is the need. Not a book for straight reading, perhaps, but a real contribution to better understanding of the historical pattern. The period covered is 1732-1799.
