KIRKUS REVIEW

This is a difficult book to judge, seen from galley proofs, but- as companion volume to the other two, George Washington's World and Abraham Lincoln's World one can safely assume that the arrangement of the text, the charts, diagrams and pictures will bring the facts into focus. The plan is unique with Miss Foster. She manages, through cross sectioning history, to give a sense not only of a specific time and place, but of what was happening elsewhere in the world at that time. This takes the period of Augustus Caesar, and covers the years before and after the birth of Christ. The very unfamiliarity of the characters and events of history, for children under High School level, make this somewhat older in appeal than the others. Here we have figures from Roman history, Greek history, Jewish and Christian history, figures in the arts, in literature, festivals and ceremonies. A book for extended sale- to schools and public libraries -- and for children of Junior High school level, and the unusually gifted ten and eleven year old.
