BORDER GIRL

Miss Fox usually, as far as I can remember, has written of southern mountaineers, so this story of Northern Vermont, in the throes of the smuggling troubles of the War of 1812, is a departure. It is a good yarn, with adventure, enough of history, adolescent dawning love to appeal to girls in the early teens. Tories and Rebels -- a division gradually thinning out, but still enough to split friends -- with Deborah on one side and Peter on the other -- and the secret knowledge that they shared a bond and barrier between them. Deborah did her share for her country and kept trust with Peter at the same time. A good story of a period and background not hackneyed in young people's literature.
