This is definitely for the beginner for it is arranged by lessons that progress from the fundamentals of boats and sailing, in one sail catboats, to the advanced techniques needed for racing, regattas and boat maintenance. The third section is for those sponsoring and organizing sailing classes and fleets, and includes methods of teaching such groups. Each of the chapters ends with questions based on the lesson, and some give practices and drills to underline the instructions; the 14th chapter has a summary of its contents for teaching. The material is topically arranged-basic seamanship, safety, sailing in light and heavy weather, elements of racing tactics, etc.,-- with numbered short paragraphs under each topic, and knot tying is included in each chapter; there is an appendix of answers to questions and another on official racing rules. The whole seems like a practical, personal workbook as well as a useful tool for class work.
