To Geoffrey Bourne, current Director of the world-famous Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center attached to Emory University in Atlanta, chimpanzees, gorillas, organutans and other related species are genuinely ""people"" -- individuals in social groupings each with idiosyncrasies, ranges of intellect, and variations in temperament which make them ideal subjects for study. In this volume he combines choice anecdotal material with documented research throughout the world, and particularly that done at the Center. Accompanying the author's plea for preservation of the varied primate species are absorbing accounts of the usefulness of these animals as potential organ donors, participants in crossed-circulation experiments, space research, and other clinical-medical studies. The writing is clear and simple throughout.
