KIRKUS REVIEW

John Tregard, the young narrator, stumbles, but never falls, in his efforts to solve the mysteries of Mercury Island, a guano-covered hell-hole where a seabed diamond-mining operation is in progress. His determined investigation leads to solution of the enigma of Shelborne, the island's strange inhabitant; the secret, death-dealing rattles known ironically as ""The Bells of St. Mary""; and the odd circumstances of the diamonds. Mr. Jenkins combines a storyteller's flair with active suspense. the ending suffers from contrivance, but it's good Hollywood and Mr. Jenkins is writing the screen play.
