THE GREEN THUMB GARDEN HANDBOOK

Here's a basic garden handbook that takes nothing for granted and that provides basic facts, basic how-to, basic lists- and, most important of all, basic answers to the questions every gardener-who has not graduated to professional status- is bound at some time or other to ask. The order, the inclusions, and so on, follow established order:- laws. Flowering annuals, perennials, house plants, bulbs, tubers and corms, vegetables and herbs, home fruit culture, soils and fertilizers, landscaping, roses, plant propagation, greenhouse gardening (very brief, this), and a final section which is very unusual containing charts of conversion, reducing the labels on insecticides fertilizers, etc. to amounts in usable quantities. What is unique in this book is the generous space given to charts, with miniacule detail as to mature growth, size, color, time of planting, time of bloom, etc. The reasons for failure are also given more attention than in many garden books. There is, shrift on some areas- comparatively little on vines, not enough information on shade planting of shrubs, almost nothing on special types of gardens (rock gardens, for instance). But after all, this should be viewed as a first and basic book for the new home owner who needs a how-to-go-about-it book for general reference.
