Considerable emotionalism and overemphasis for the story of Gina, egocentric to the point of egomania, who ruins several lives including her own in her attempt to gain money and power. Giving up Tim, who loves her, to marry Diego, ward of an old Spanish family in the Philippines, she passes up Diego and blackmails- with the threat of a baby- Vicente into marriage, Vicente who soon hates her. With the war, Vicente becomes a collaborationist, while Gina plays both ends against the middle, betrays Diego, eventually betrays the Japanese to save Tim's life but cannot win back his love. The background here provides a variation on the story of a ruthless, rapacious woman.
