GENERAL JOHN GLOVER AND HIS MARBLEHEAD MARINERS by George Athan Billias

GENERAL JOHN GLOVER AND HIS MARBLEHEAD MARINERS

This is a biography of John Glover, a native of Marblehead, who in 1776 at 44 recruited his amphibious regiment of sailors and fishermen from Marblehead and nearby ports, and formed a unit which made a substantial contribution to the colonial cause. Not only did they engage effectively in the battles taking place in and around New York City, but it was Glover's Mariners who later ferried Washington across the Delaware on that stormy Christmas night of 1776. A solidly-written book which casts as much light on the Revolution as it does on Glover, this is recommended.
