THE TOUGH GET GOING

Inspector Schmidt's plodding Watson is back yet again--ostensibly more personally involved this time because the hotshot investigative reporter whom the cops just fished out of the Hudson, Jess Copeland, was practically Bagby's godson. Schmidtty and Baggy reconstruct less' last hours--a massage parlor information drop, an attempted murder-by-amphetamines-and-high-window in a publisher's penthouse--and they tussle with corrupt FBI, corrupt cops, and corrupt newsfolk. A well-oiled NY elevator stopping at every expected floor--and you're free to get off when and wherever.
