KIRKUS REVIEW

An historical () novel of the late Empress Dowager of China, lush, extravagant, and pretty cheap. She was Orchid, vain, petulant, opportunistic, but extremely beautiful. A simple boy, Lotus, falls in love with her, follows her to Peking, where, much against his will he is forced to become a eunuch and serves at the royal court. Orchid comes there as one of two thousand concubines, in the lowest category, but through the devious machinations of the devoted Lotus, becomes Empress Dowager at last. Swish!
