Imagine being the ghost of a ghost? Like Henry Evans, who is hired to perpetuate the oeuvre of a deceased local Grace Livingston Hill and who finds himself not in the grip of his muse but in that of his author. (Mr. Lanning, if you remember, wrote a superb suspense story of possession--The Pedestal: this has a slight similarity of theme however different the tone.) In addition to the fact that Henry is unable to keep the late writer's talent overbearing--he's got a massive writer's block (and Mr. Lanning has a little trouble keeping this one going until the end)--Henry is also about to marry Alice. She's the handmaiden to the Bishop who has spent her life in upstanding diocesan works. And all of this radiates to include some High Church high jinks involving a parish house dedication, a factious church schism, and some general nonsense about clerics in various states of attire and one who is momentarily unfrocked.... All in all, a stylish comic spirit with a Goodwill box full of divinely and not so Divinely funny moments.
