A long, reliable novel of marriage in the Civil War era, convincing enough but no sparks flying. The story involves Edith, brought up by her aunt and uncle in a small Illinois town, and her years with Robert Cecil, Southerner, which bring periods of simmering discontent and misunderstanding to test their love. The war breaks out, and he joins the Southerners, is captured as a spy, to escape through per machinations and eventually rejoin her and their children. In the last analysis, it's just one more adequate book.
