Jordan Page-Thomas, a more or less anonymous young man except for the hyphenation of his name which is repeatedly mentioned, wants to buy the old house with a windmill in East Hampton inhabited, or rather infested, by two crazy ladies--mother and daughter--and innumerable cats with celebrity names which remind the mother of halcyon days with the Fitzgeralds, Murphys and Picasso. Jordan is locked up in a closet for two months with a dead cat, escapes only to return willingly for the final crunch which will enable him to take possession of the house and your senses. Caldwell's not an offensive writer but the story he's bad-dreamed-up is peerlessly silly.
