THE PROSPECTS OF AMERICAN DEMOCRACY

This is a book that does what most of the other books try to do -- and fail. Dr. Counts succeeds in marshalling the salient facts about democracy in America, past and present, the battles it has withstood, the ground it has lost -- to whom and why. He presents the challenge of the overthrow of democracy in Russia, Germany and Italy, and claims for us a unique heritage and a special course of development. He confronts us with an aristocracy of economic forces, our gravest danger, and presents a program for action. He demands an educational awakening. It is not easy reading at the start, but as his arguments gather momentum, the reader is swept along with the force of his argument, the clarity of his thought and purpose. A book for thoughtful readers.
