The story is told by Lewis Manley, one of a group of boys who started out together to sail down the Green River, were discouraged and turned back, and joined Bennett and his expedition. Hunger, lack of water, the terrors of Death Valley resulted in desertions and separations, but Manley and Rogers eventually succeeded. This is based on factual material, but there is no spark of distinction in the retelling.
