In 1931 Living Philosophies presented the ""creeds"" of some of our foremost thinkers. The book reached a wider market than anticipated. The public was looking for a basic way of thought, and eagerly read to find what leaders had formulated for themselves. Now, eight years later, a new group have been brought together, a group representing a wider ranger of nationalities, points of view, backgrounds. Some of them give as framework for their beliefs, an intimate glimpse into their own backgrounds and personalities; others are more objective and impersonal; virtually all face the problem of adjusting a way of thought to a world in turmoil. There are represented a unique group of writers, philosophers, doers, including for example W. H. Auden, Franz Boas, Pearl Buck, Stuart Chase, Havelock Ellis, Lin Yutang, Thomas Mann, Jules Romain, George Santayana, Vilhjalmur Stefansson, James Thurber, Rebecca West, etc. Each article is prefaced by a succinct biographical note. At the close, a section is given to those who contributed to the previous volume, to give, in brief compass, the summary of changes they fell in their own creeds. Clifton Fadiman has contributed an excellent foreword, summarizing the idea behind the symposium, and indicating the contribution made by the people represented. Many of the articles appeared in abridged form in The Nation. The market is that of The Story of Philosophy, The Importance of Living, etc.
