THE STORY OF THE PEACE CORPS

By

Publisher: Fleet

The Peace Corp is certain to receive further attention in book form, and despite this one and the complementary Letters from the Peace Corps (see p. 479, 1964), a comprehensive book has yet to be written about it. In the meantime, the present brief book is helpful and informative in its orientation. It first gives the history of the Corp from November 2, 1960 when then Senator Kennedy recommended its establishment, with a nod to fore-running organization and to the contributions of Congress-man Reuss and Senator Humphrey. It describes the membership, numbering nearly 10,000; the selection and training for an experience which Dean Munro of Harvard says is more significant than a Rhodes scholarship. It follows the volunteers overseas (now serving in 47 countries), then gives an idea of the projects and programs in nine countries were the Corps has been in operation longest in such varied activities as agriculture, marketing, teaching, engineering. An appendix lists the trainees and volunteers in various world areas and gives the organization plan of the Corps. A good introduction to the Corps.
