This story of the Foreign Legion appeared in Harper's Magazine and created sufficient interest to suggest the possibility of issuing it in a slim volume. Herald himself served in the Foreign Legion -- and is now with the U.S. Army. This is the true story behind the incident in which an officer of the Foreign Legion captured 24 Nazis by shouting orders in German. Later he made confession to a group of German-Jewish refugees, stating that he was actually Techow, one of Rathenau's murderers, and that during his imprisonment, a letter from Rathenau's mother to his mother inspired him to study the history of the Jewish people, religion, lore and language -- and since his discharge he had devoted his life to expiating his crime. The fact of the letter was revealed at the trial; its aftermath now strikes a note of hope. As a book it seems slight.
