THE CRISIS IN MEDICAL EDUCATION

Dr. Evans delivered the papers published here as the 1963 William W. Cook ectures on American Institutions at the University of Michigan. His thesis is that university and medical education have tended to become more disease oriented and less patient oriented. While the primary function of the university lies in the area of teaching and research, he feels that the university ""should concern itself with new forms of service which may lead to change in the teaching and research."" Specialization has gained at the expense of ""something equally valuable -- a sound general view of the patient."" Dr. Evans sees the necessity of a community laboratory devoted to the study of human biology in the largest sense (what makes it human is its practice). His remarks are essentially aimed at those involved in teaching and medicine and give the lay reader little to grasp for broader application.
