CHARITY GIRL

Miss Heyer, in spite of her opulent output, is hardly at Point Non-Plus. This time Gretna Green is mentioned but once--when Lady Silverdale of the self-cosseting vapors, fears the worst, since pathetic little Cherry, whom she had been talked into taking under her protection, and her son, disappear simultaneously. But Henna Silverdale, sensible and charming, knows better. Also Viscount Desmond who gallantly conveyed the orphaned Cherry from a Cinderella existence with a nasty aunt. It's mostly Des's bumble-broth in attending to Cherry's dreadful relatives, including Father, who turns up a barndoor savage, not to mention a fieamint, hog-grubber and lobcock. Escape-prone matrons may unpack their quizzing-glasses.
