DISCIPLINES OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE by Georgia Harkness

DISCIPLINES OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

By

Pub Date: March 27th, 1967
Publisher: John Knox

The chapters in this book bring together various articles written by Professor Harkness over the past thirty years. Some of these have been revised or rewritten, the next to last chapter taking up themes relating to the rise of the laity in recent years. The book is divided into two main parts. The first deals with foundations of Christian faith; the second, much the longer, with the methods of Christian living. Throughout, the address is to the practical, and can be illustrated by such questions as these: ""Do you have a definite time of prayer each day?"" ""Do you say grace at meals?"" ""What does Christ mean to you?"" ""What do you want most for your family?"" ""Do you try to feel God's presence in your work?"" and others. Although the book offers many helpful insights and suggestions, the reader may not be able to escape a certain feeling of its being dated, especially in those chapters originally written in the 1930's and 1940's. Even the beginner in Christian disciplines may feel that he needs guidance more immediately in keeping with the years in which he is living.
