KIRKUS REVIEW

The 1's marked the beginning of the romantic movement in music, and this is a history of the growth and decline of that period. The author breaks the century down into four sections, the '30's, the '60's, the '90's and 1920's. the emphasis is on the changing style and its creators rather than on aesthetic criticism. Good general coverage for reference, including names and works of musical importance in the past century. For the expert rather than the layman, and sure to be open to criticism for both inclusions and exclusions. School libraries and musical organizations of all kinds.
