FOR LAYMEN AND OTHER MARTYRS

The martyr, observes Bishop Kennedy, is not only the Christian burned at the stake. He is also the living witness. The title suggests that this book will give him support and guidance in the discharge of this calling. But what the author provides is a series of elementary homilies, to the effect that the church is ""wonderful""--or could be if laymen were faithful to it and particularly, the Methodist denomination. Small children on the street proudly declare, ""We are Methodist children."" The congregation, the ministry, preaching; theology, are among the manifestations of the church on which the author gives brief and cheerful disquisitions. Martyrs may not be burned at the stake, as he says; but from this contribution to their spiritual health it may be feared that they could die of malnutrition.
