To better express the scope of this home furnishing guide, a more appropriate title would be, Modern Design for Living, for nowhere in this solid study or in its 550 illustrations is there a sign of anything but clean, efficient, functional MODERN. A little late on the avant-garde scene where the pendulum is presently swinging toward traditional and eclectic modes, this traces the contributions of American, Italian, Scandinavian and German designs in the strictly modern idiom. Ingenious methods of dealing with such inherent flaws as lack of space, odd-sized rooms and low ceilings, show the professional or amateur decorator how to use effectively lighting, color and textures, how to choose furniture and accessories, how to integrate the complete design. The main portion of the text is divided into nine chapters which deal individually with the decoration of the hall, the living room, combined living and dining room, the separate dining room or area, bedroom, kitchen, children's room, and study as well as with the special problems posed by the small apartment. Superb photographs (105 in full color) demonstrate major suggestions each step of the way. Though the more flexible decorator will be able to adapt these ideas to various styles, the aficionado of the modern will benefit most.
