Madame de Stael's account of Napoleonic France, as bona fide students know, not only provides intelligent observations on Bonaparte and his ""despotic organization"" but reveals the woman herself -- as lover of Talleyrand, novelist Benjamin Constant, poet August Wilhelm yon Schlegel among others, she played 18th-century sexual politics with more than average joie de vivre.
