Gerrit Judd, who belongs to a kamaaina (born in Hawaii) family, offers ""a broad sample of the innumerable writings which deal with the Hawaiian experience."" He draws from familiar and less well known ""but revealing"" writings about the island. His book, like Gaul is in three parts: Hawaii's history, from discovery by Captain James Cook in 1778 to statehood in 1959, with such individuals as Melville Nordhoff, Queen Liliukolani, and Mitsuo Fuchida (aviator turned evangelist who led the air attack on Pearl Harbor) contributing: Hawaiian traditions and places, with Padraic Colum writing of myth, others of the bula, the luau, volcanoes, Molokai; Hawaii in literature -- Carlyle and Tennyson on Kappiloani, who defied Pele for her Christian faith, Mark Twain Roughing It. Robert Louis Stevenson and Jack London. Glossary, some basic books to read (minimal list).
