LOCKED HARBOR

The fishermen of Veere (The Netherlands) are embittered: the government is damming up the harbor, forcing them to move to another town which will also be dammed eventually. Machiel is the son of a fisherman, but fascinated by the mechanics of the dam and drawn to the snubbed son of the chief engineer, Allard; this new interest and his ambivalence about the construction creates a rift with his best friend Andries, who categorically opposes the dam, but brings him closer to Tannie, a farmer's daughter who is more open-minded. The active involvement of eleven-year-olds in such weighty matters will surprise American sixth graders as much as the author's patronizing tone will irritate them; the passive plot will probably bore them.
