For a story with as many of the elements about planting a window garden as this- a warmly emotional tale with an ending as big as the tree that results. Carol who lives in New York's lower east side dreams of a small garden and finally gets some seeds and a box full of soil from a friend who works for the City Parks Department. During growth, all sorts of things happen to the box-tar is spilt, there is a marauding cat, watering is neglected over a long weekend. One plant does survive, grows up large and at a school exhibit a lecturer from the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens identifies it as a castor bean tree.
