Yo Yo Boing! ($15.95 paperback original; Sept.; 192 pp.; 0-935480-97-8): A fractious comic novel by Braschi, a highly praised Puerto Rican—born poet, dramatizes cultural strife between New York City’s “American” and Latin American populations in a linguistic hybrid of English mixed with untranslated Spanish. Its (apparent) core is the combative relationship between two lovers who are also writers (and rivals), and it bristles with lively, if more than occasionally self-indulgent, literary conversation. This in-your-face assertion of the vitality of Latino culture has many agreeable moments, but—let’s face it—how much of its potential readership will be able to understand more than half of it?
