Even though the eclectic-eccentric-expatriate Miss Stein chose to live abroad, she was very sentimental about America: ""writers have to have two countries, the one where they belong and the one in which they live really. ""The New Republic's editor has excerpted and collected some of the things she said and wrote about the country where she belonged, about American soldiers of both wars, about what she saw after a return visit (houses and drugstores--dirty--and ten cent stores), about American concepts and tastes and language. . . . ""Your native land is your native land, it certainly is"" and this must be for some of the people who live there but who I don't know and why because that is why. . . .
